5 Easy Ways to Give Back this Holiday Season
‘Tis the season for filling up on delicious meals, caroling for the neighbors, and decking your halls with holiday decor. However, in the midst of spoiling your loved ones with gifts, it’s also important to think about small acts of kindness that can have a big impact on someone less fortunate.
With so much to do for family and friends, fitting in time to give back can be challenging. Trust us, we understand! Over the years, we at Backyard Farms have discovered some easy ways to help others in need while making ourselves feel awesome in the process!
Donate to Your Local Food Bank

No one should go hungry during the holidays, but unfortunately, so many do. Donating to your local food bank is easy, affordable, and can be done with a click of a button. Whether it’s a monetary donation or unperishable food products, your contribution will make the season a little bit brighter for people who don’t have a lot.
For example, $25 to the Good Shepard Food Bank of Maine will help to feed 100 families. Backyard Farms donates to this particular organization every week, and we can tell you from first-hand experience that everything you give makes a big difference!
Bring Your Old Coats to Goodwill
Do you have a closet full of forgotten coats, gloves, and scarves that you will never wear again? Pack them up and drop them off at your local Goodwill or a homeless shelter on your way to do some last-minute holiday shopping. Not only will you be helping someone bundle up for the icy winter season, you’ll also clear up some storage space! It’s a win-win.
Box Up Your Child’s Old Toys
Let’s face it – a child’s toys go in and out of style quicker than a trending Twitter topic. If you’re not sure how to make room for all of the new toys under the tree, consider bringing some of your child’s old ones to a local children’s hospital. Your kid’s neglected toys will become another’s Christmas miracle.
Sign Up for a Holiday 5K
If you are looking for a way to work off some of that holiday feast, why not combine fitness with a good cause? Many holiday 5K’s donate all proceeds from registration fees to a charity and others have some incentive programs that put the “fun” in fundraising. Whether you just show up on race day or get your friends involved in your fundraising efforts, a 5K is a great way to do some good.
Pay it Forward
Have you ever had a stranger pay for your coffee, or received a nice compliment from someone unexpectedly? If you have, then you know it has the power to put a smile on your face for the rest of the day. Pay it forward with your own small act of out-of-the-blue kindness to someone you’ve never met. Who knows where the generosity will end!
2016 has been a challenging year for everyone in some, way, shape or form. We hope these simple ideas help you start 2017 with a smile on your face as you do the same for others. Happy New Year!
